Where to Go Fishing In Devon

Of all the locations in England to wet a line, Devon is probably the best. Not only do you have the truly English coarse fishing ponds in abundance around the place but Plymouth actually offers shore fishing in the saltwater that can be really good and deep sea fishing that at times can produce truly magnificent captures.

Here is a guide to five of the best locations in Devon and what you might come across. Devon provides options for all fishing, beach, estuary, boat, rock, kayak, you name it. You will find that Devon is the best place in England to wet a line, without a doubt. Check out the car rental options in Devon and travel to all of these wonderful locations.

Ilfracombe

The pier here is a fantastic spot to wet a line. Near to many bait and tackle stores and with facilities aplenty within eye shot you will find this a great place to take the kids. It is clean and comfortable and often produces great captures. The pier has two levels, a high and a low, which is submerged during the higher tide and can be dangerous. Some of the areas of the pier have no handrails so be cautious with the kids. Other than that it provides a great variety with line fishing for crab being a favourite. Other species to catch here include Pollack, Bass, Mackerel, Mullet, Wrasse, Cod, Conger Eel and more.

Putsborough

Putsborough is a wonderful beach village that offers excellent surfing and fishing. The protection offered by the nearby headland makes this a great place to launch an ocean kayak and give the deep sea fishing a try. If you are adventurous you will find huge bass and lots of pollack among many other species. Off the beach you can catch big stingrays at the right time of year as well as your more usual beach fishing species.

Morte Point

Morte Point is a fantastic place to hike and is considered among the best walking areas of England. What is less known to tourists is that it is also one of the best fishing locations. The beach here provides some fantastic fishing all year round with bull huss, dogfish and conger eels on the menu 12 months a year. Mackerel and bass of epic proportions are found in the summer months while summer and spring provides excellent opportunities for wrasse. Garfish and pollack are also caught here.

Hartland Point

A potentially more challenging location to fish but as with all the more difficult spots to access you will be rewarded with a better variety of fish. It is well known as a bass hotspot. One of the better rock fishing destinations around.

Taw Estuary

This estuary is a fantastic place to catch a feed of flounder and codling with winter being the premier time of the year to fish for these great species. Greysands and Appledore Slipway are the best two spots in the estuary. Beware the strong currents. Appledore is also a good place to launch from, head outside and catch some fantastic bass.

This comes straight from the pens of the fishing mad travellers at Skedaddle, if you’re keen to do a bit of fishing in Plymouth, give them a look.

5 Best Places to Ski in Europe in summer

The best areas in Europe for summertime skiing are located in the higher elevations of the Alps. Because many of the continent's most popular summer ski resorts are also centres for activities like boating and hiking, visitors on holiday can take advantage of a mix of seasons and activities within the same stay.

Tignes, France

The Grand Motte glacier, rising to heights of over 3600 metres, is the center piece of France's largest developed summer ski resort. Skiers hop aboard a railway and then transfer to cable car to reach the heights where the snow is always plentiful and the views spectacular.

Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Open for summer skiing and snowboarding on the Allalinhorn glacier in southern Switzerland, Saas-Fee has 20 km of runs for all levels of skiers at an altitude of 3600 metres. The village is car-free, and transport by train is a matter of a couple hours from Geneva. The ski area includes snowboarding courses, plus a relatively uncrowded atmosphere that makes skiing more fun.

Zermatt Gletscher, Switzerland

Summer skiing in the Zermatt-Matterhorn region of Switzerland ranges over 20 km of slopes on the Theodul glacier. Views of the Matterhorn, knocking ski poles with training competitive skiers from around the world, Zermatt's glacier ski area is the highest altitude and largest snow sport region in the Alps.

Kitzsteinhorn, Austria

Located near the shores of the blue glacial waters of the Zeller See and the popular resort area of Zell am See, this summer ski destination features transport via cable car to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at a height of 3209 metres. Holiday visitors can enjoy both temperate skiing and water sports from one day to the next.

Courmayeur, Italy

Near the French border and the ski resort of Chamonix, Courmayeur lies at the foot of Mont Blanc. Linked by cable car to the glacier above the French resort, an area called Vallee Blanche, Courmayeur is a popular summer skiing venue due to its moderate slopes. The winter ski area is accessible from the car-free village via one of Europe's biggest gondolas.

The French Laundry Restaurant

If you are looking for one of the finest dining experiences in the world then you must book a table at the French Laundry restaurant. Located in the beautiful Napa Valley region of California the 3 Michelin starred restaurant is run by Chef Thomas Keller who is rated as one of the best chefs in the world.

As well as being awarded 3 stars by the Michelin Guide, the restaurant has been a constant contender in the Restaurant Magazine’s list of the best 50 restaurants in the world, being awarded the best restaurant in the world accolade twice in 2003 and 2004. The restaurant has also consistently earned excellent reviews, including from the New York Times. Anthony Bourdain has stated that the French Laundry is ‘the best restaurant in the world, period.”

The restaurant building itself was originally built at the end of the 19th century as a saloon bar. The building later became a French steam laundry during the era of prohibition, hence the name of the modern restaurant. The building is now a part of the national register of historic places.

Thomas Keller has owned the restaurant since 1994 and has developed a restaurant and cuisine that is some of the best in the world.

The food is mostly French in style but with North American influences and ingredients and is based around two daily prix fixe menus that contain 9 courses, as well as tasting menus. On these menus you will find that no ingredient is used in more than one course meaning you truly are able to taste a whole range of different flavours throughout the meal.

Luxury Cruise Holidays

In the last few years I have started travelling on cruise holidays and I have found it to be a wonderful way to get around. Some of the cabins are truly luxurious and spacious and are as good any some of the very best hotel rooms.

The food is often excellent and Cruise Lines I particularly recommend for the luxury market include the Cunard ships such as the Queen Elisabeth and some of the Royal Caribbean ships.

I especially like the Queen Elisabeth and really hope to travel on her again soon!

First Class Travel on the Trans Siberian Railway

When people think of travelling on the Trans Siberian Railway, an enormous rail system connecting Russia to the Far East, they often think of people being crammed into uncomfortable looking bunk beds in carriages that are crammed with people. Whilst there is certainly an argument to travel on the Trans Siberian in this nature to experience it, there is also the alternative option, which is to travel in the more luxurious section of the train.

When enjoying the miles of fantastic scenery along the Trans Siberian Railway, the comfort of being able to do so from your own carriage away from noisy co passengers is surely the best way to do so. These carriages contain comfortable beds, as opposed to small bunk beds in the standard class carriages, and plenty of room to move around. They are well kept which ensures that they are always clean and tidy, whilst the comfortable seating provides the ideal perch from which to enjoy the scenery. The rooms also have televisions and some have their own on suite bathrooms, although others share communal bathrooms with people staying in the same class, although these are also to a high standard.

One of the best aspects of travelling in the first class carriages on the Trans Siberian Railway is that you get to experience the high quality cooking of the on board chefs who create local specialities using fresh ingredients. More luxury rail journeys around the world.

Travelling on the Seabourn Quest

Cruising the oceans on a modern liner is many people’s idea of luxury, and the extent of that luxury is dependant entirely on which liner you choose. One of the most luxurious liners currently trawling the waters of the world is the Seabourn Quest, which is one of the most recent liner completions boasting simply fantastic resources and facilities which makes the customer’s experience hard to match elsewhere.

The Seabourn Quest was created in Genoa by one of the finest ship building teams in the world, with the aim to raise the bar in luxury cruise line travel. This was certainly achieved as every inch of the liner was designed intricately to maximise the customer’s experience. The design of the ship is only one aspect of creating a luxury liner, once the building is finished the management and staff must work tirelessly hard to create and uphold the standards which will keep the liner in the upper echelons of the market. To ensure this, the Seabourne quest employs only the very best from the service industry, with world class chefs, barmen and customer service agents working together to see to the passenger’s every need. Indeed, the restaurants on board this monster ship are on a par with some of the best restaurants which can be found in cities around the world.

Seabourne Quest has all of the features you would expect from a luxury liner, and more!! The onboard pool is spacious and provides marvellous views of the ocean, whilst the on board entertainment is provided by credible performers in top quality venues.
